Women in Islam – Um Emarah – Part 2

Um Emarah and some other women also took part in the war against Banu Quraithah. The prophet SAW gave them part of the booty. She also attended the Treaty of Hudaybiyah. She had a stick and she stuck a knife in her belt, to defend herself in case of attack.

Tweenty women took part in the Battle of Khaybar; one of them was Um Emarah. And she also attended the Battle of Hunain. During this latter Battle of Hunain, a man entered the field riding a camel and waving a flag. Um Emarah hit the camel, then hit the man bravely.

And when Abu Bakr rA sent the army to fight Musaylimah, Um Emarah was once again present. She was 60 years old back then. And during this battle against Musaylimah, she lost her arm and sustained 11 injuries, but still rejoiced at the victory and the killing of Musaylimah.

Um Emarah once complained to the prophet SAW that men receive most of the rewards, and inquired about women’s rewards. At Um Emarah’s inquiry, the following verse was revealed to the prophet SAW:

“For Muslim men and women,- for believing men and women, for devout men and women, for true men and women, for men and women who are patient and constant, for men and women who humble themselves, for men and women who give in Charity, for men and women who fast (and deny themselves), for men and women who guard their chastity, and for men and women who engage much in Allah’s praise,- for them has Allah prepared forgiveness and great reward” (33:35).

See how the verse  ends with “for them has Allah prepared forgiveness and great reward”.

Um Emarah held a very special status among the women companion. The prophet SAW prayed that she and her family be his friends in Paradise. May Allah be pleased with Um Emarah. She fought bravely in every battle, so that Islam reaches us 14 centuries later.
